Designed by Peter Moore and part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a canvas upper in Light Smoke Grey/White/Photon Dust. By 1980 Nike held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and went public, and from there the company could afford to make shoes that were not trying to win anything. The women's Dunk Low LX is a direct descendant of that freedom: a court silhouette rebuilt around finish rather than function, in a light grey that carries no team, no season and no argument. LX is Nike's designation for an upgraded execution, which on a colourway this quiet means the material is the entire proposition. There is nothing here to hide behind, no bright block and no collaborator logo, just the shape and the surfaces it is cut from.
Look one: soft tailoring, a light grey or stone trouser with a white shirt, letting the shoe extend the leg line instead of interrupting it. Look two: black leggings or slim black trousers with an oversized grey knit, where the pale shoe lifts the bottom of an otherwise heavy fit. A white or light grey low sock keeps the transition clean, and a dark sock will cut the line badly. Light grey shows road grime faster than mid grey, so protect it before first wear and keep it off wet pavement. Brush dry dirt away before it works into the surface, clean with mild soap on a soft brush, and dry naturally away from heat.
Nike's court silhouettes became staples of mainstream American youth dress as the brand turned into a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s, then returned through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Light grey is what the silhouette wears when it has finished making that argument: a shade with no cultural allegiance at all, chosen for how it sits in a wardrobe rather than what it signals. The Swoosh, drawn by Carolyn Davidson, first used on 18 June 1971 and registered on 22 January 1974, remains the one identifying mark, and on a near-tonal shoe it works more like a texture than a logo.
Style code FB7720 002 marks the women's LX build. The Dunk Low structure is unchanged, a low collar below the ankle bone and an upper blocked into toe, quarter, Swoosh, eyestay and heel, but the LX designation moves the attention to surfaces, so the interest comes from how the panels differ in texture rather than in colour. A light grey is a demanding shade for that, since it flattens under poor materials and comes alive under good ones. The women's last runs narrower through the heel and midfoot. Underfoot the platform is flat and court-derived, following Nike traction thinking that traces back to Bowerman's waffle iron and his search for a lighter, grippier sole.
