Designed by Peter Moore and released on 13 December 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Mineral Slate/Armory Navy/Black/White. Mineral Slate with Armory Navy is the Dunk Low at its most adult: a muted grey blue base with a deep navy overlay, two tones close enough that the shoe reads as one colour from across a street and separates only when you look. That restraint is unusual for a model built on contrast, and it is the version people buy when they want a Dunk they can wear to work. The shape carries it because it is so well established, having followed Air Force 1s and Air Max models into mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s and back through 1990s and 2000s casual looks.
Two ways to wear it. Grey wool trousers with a navy crewneck, where the shoe reads as smart casual footwear and nobody has to think about basketball. Or casual: dark denim, a white tee and a slate coloured overshirt, tying the base tone into the layer above. It handles autumn and winter city wear better than pale Dunks and copes with light rain without looking ruined. Size true; the Dunk is a little snug through the midfoot. Clean with a damp cloth and mild foam, condition occasionally so the navy does not dull at the crease, and let them dry away from heat.
The Dunk was rescued from obsolescence by skateboarding and Nike SB, a division whose history includes a 2005 misstep over Minor Threat album art and a public apology, and then by fashion, which cared about the colour blocking rather than the board. Dark, sober colourways are the ones that let the model into offices and evenings, where a two tone bright pair would look like sportswear. That range is exactly why the Dunk outlasted most of its contemporaries: it can be a statement or a default depending on which two colours it wears.
Panelled leather upper on the Dunk Low last, with contrast leather at the Swoosh, eyestay, collar and heel, a foam midsole and the rubber outsole carrying the circular pivot pattern. No visible Air unit sits underfoot, so the platform is flat, firm and light, which suits long days standing more than the bulkier Nike silhouettes do. Slate and navy are both forgiving colours: they hide dust, scuffing and city grime far better than any white or pastel build, which makes this one of the lower maintenance Dunks available. The leather needs about a week to crease into place, after which the shoe holds its shape and its colour with very little intervention.
