Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 June 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Aster Pink/Sail/Aster Pink. Aster Pink is a clear, cool pink, brighter than the dusty tones the Dunk usually gets and closer to a flower than to a blush. On the Next Nature build, that colour lands on a shoe made with content, which is the direction Nike has been pushing since long before the label existed. Nike Grind has been taking manufacturing scrap and worn out shoes back into new product and surfaces for years. What makes this pairing work is the Dunk itself: a 1980s basketball shape with a two panel upper that treats colour as its main instrument, so a single confident pink can carry the entire design without any additional graphic.
Two looks. Bright and simple: white or ecru wide trousers, a white tee and a denim jacket, the pink acting as the single point of colour. Grounded: black straight leg jeans or a black skirt with tights and a grey knit, where the shoe becomes a deliberate interruption rather than a match. Bright pink is easiest to wear when nothing else in the outfit competes with it, so keep the rest neutral. Dunks fit true with a padded collar that needs a few wears. This is a dry weather shoe. Guard against dark denim rubbing the toe, clean marks immediately, and keep them out of long direct sun, which fades bright dyes unevenly.
The Dunk arrived late to Nike's cultural story and then took it over. The women's programme is where that logic has been sharpest, releasing tones rather than technologies. Nike's investment in women's sport is long standing, with Serena Williams as an endorser and track athletes including Allyson Felix and Jackie Joyner-Kersee on its roster, and the women's Dunk is the retail face the brand shows most often.
A Dunk Low is a low collar, a padded ankle, a two tone panelled upper and a flat rubber cup sole. The Next Nature designation means input worked into that familiar build rather than a new silhouette, which is the sensible way to do it, since the Dunk sells at a volume where material choices actually add up. Aster Pink as the overlay tone against a paler base makes the panel split the whole story, no stitching detail or contrast lace needed. Bright pink is the least forgiving finish in a cupboard: scuffs go grey, dirt goes brown and denim transfers blue. Spray a protector before first wear, clean with foam and a soft brush, and keep them off wet streets.
