Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 August 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper. The company behind this shoe did not begin as a shoemaker. In 1964, in Eugene, Oregon, track coach Bill Bowerman and his former runner Phil Knight founded Blue Ribbon Sports and sold Japanese Onitsuka Tiger running shoes out of the boot of Knight's car at track meets, because Bowerman thought American runners deserved something lighter than the domestic market offered. The Swoosh, drawn by design student Carolyn Davidson, was first used on 18 June 1971, and the Nike name, coined by employee Jeff Johnson, followed. Lot 37 sits inside a numbered Off-White series that treats that inheritance as raw material rather than as scripture. You are getting a Dunk Low presented as a catalogued specimen, one entry in a run, a familiar silhouette handed back to you with its filing number showing.
Two ways to wear Lot 37. First, treat it as the loudest thing in a quiet fit: straight leg raw denim with a break just past the ankle, a heavy cotton tee, a coach jacket in a flat colour, and let the shoe be the only thing anyone reads. Second, go full deconstruction: wide cropped trousers, a boxy overshirt, chunky ribbed socks visible above the collar. This is a dry weather shoe and a collector piece, so keep it off wet Indian monsoon streets. Brush the panels with a soft dry brush after each wear, use a foam cleaner sparingly on the midsole, and store it away from direct sun so nothing yellows or goes brittle.
From the 1980s onward Nike moved from sports equipment to status symbol, first through basketball and then, through basketball, into hip hop and mainstream American youth dress. Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples, and the Dunk rode the same current back into 1990s and 2000s casual wear. A numbered Off-White lot is the endpoint of that journey: the shoe is no longer just worn, it is collected, indexed and argued about. Nike has spent decades learning that its silhouettes carry meaning outside the arena, from the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising for Michael Jordan onward, and this release is what happens when a designer takes that meaning apart in public.
The Dunk Low is a low collar shape with broad panels, and panels are what a colourway like this one lives on: the eye reads the shoe as blocks, and the lot framing invites you to read each block separately rather than as one finished object. Expect a low cut collar that sits under the ankle bone and asks for a low sock, a flat riding low profile midsole with none of the pressurised Nike Air that the brand later made visible, and a tread whose grip logic descends from Bowerman's waffle experiments. Break in is short. These loosen at the throat within a week and then hold their shape for years if you rotate them.
