Designed by Peter Moore and part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Hyper Royal/Summit White/Black. Nike partnered with Apple on Nike+ to put run tracking inside a shoe, bought Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars and has been the on court uniform supplier to the NBA since 2017, all of which is a way of saying the company is rarely doing only one thing. Its most reliable product move, though, is far simpler: recolour a Dunk. The black and white execution people call Panda became the default modern sneaker because it goes with everything and asks for nothing. This version breaks that neutrality with a blue Swoosh, one coloured element in an otherwise monochrome shoe, which is the smallest possible edit and the most effective one.
Black and white goes with everything, so use the blue as your styling cue. Wear it with dark straight leg denim, a white tee and a blue overshirt or denim jacket, letting the Swoosh echo once. The second recipe is stricter: black trousers, a black tee and a grey jacket, where the blue is the only colour anywhere in the outfit. Avoid other bright accents, which reduce the Swoosh to noise. Dunks fit true to size with a narrow toe box, so go half up if your feet are wide. Protect before wear one, clean the white panels weekly so the contrast stays sharp, and dry naturally rather than near heat.
The black and white Dunk did something unusual in sneaker culture: it became genuinely universal, worn far outside the audience that follows releases. A blue Swoosh on that base is a small act of differentiation from inside a very large crowd. It signals that you know the reference and wanted a version of it that is yours.
The Dunk's panel construction is what allows a single element edit to work. Because the Swoosh is a discrete stitched piece running the length of the quarter, it can take a colour entirely on its own without disturbing the black and white blocking around it. That kind of isolation is only available on a shoe assembled from separate leather sections rather than moulded as one. Underneath is the founding Nike engineering principle, established when Bowerman poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron: the outsole does the real work. Black and white uppers show opposite problems, so clean the white with mild soap and a soft brush, wipe the black with a damp cloth, and keep the blue away from solvent.
