    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 March 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/White. The toddler cut of the white and black Dunk Low is the point where a sneaker stops being a status object and becomes a first pair of shoes, which is arguably a bigger deal. Nike has been in the business of scaling a shoe across every size and every purpose since it stopped being an importer: Blue Ribbon Sports ran from 1964 to 1972 distributing Japanese product before the company launched under its own name, with the Swoosh first used on 18 June 1971. By 1980 it held roughly half the US athletic shoe market. Reaching every foot in a household is what that share actually looks like, and a black and white toddler pair is the least complicated version of it.
Outfit one: simple and hardwearing, dark joggers with a plain sweatshirt, where black and white goes with whatever else is clean. Outfit two: smarter for family occasions, navy or olive trousers with a white shirt, since this colourway is neutral enough to pass. Good for nursery, playgrounds and travel, not for heavy rain given the white panels. Check sizing every couple of months and prioritise a thumb width of toe space over a snug fit. Care realistically: these will get destroyed, so clean the white panels early with a mild foam cleaner and a soft brush, wipe rather than soak, and air dry away from radiators.
The black and white court shoe became a household default because Nike's silhouettes stopped being sportswear and became clothing: status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s, then standard mainstream American youth dress, then permanent parts of 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes. A toddler version is the final stage of that process, where a shoe is bought without any reference to sport at all. Nike has cultivated that breadth deliberately, from a company voice set by Just Do It in 1988 to a retail identity built on its Beaverton headquarters and the first Niketown, opened in downtown Portland in 1990.
Toddler builds are not simply shrunken adult shoes. Expect a softer, more flexible sole so a developing foot can bend naturally, a wider toe box for room to grow, and an easier entry system with a padded collar so the shoe goes on without a fight. The white and black panelling follows the familiar court blocking, and the rubber outsole keeps a flat, stable footprint, which matters far more for a child learning to walk and run than any cushioning technology would. Check the fit often rather than the wear, since children outgrow shoes long before they wear them out, and make sure there is space at the toe without the heel slipping.
