    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 October 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Iron Grey/Phantom/Scream Green/Ghost Green. Halloween product is the one seasonal release Nike treats as a real design brief rather than a novelty, and Cauldron is the version that leans into the imagery instead of settling for orange and black. The SE designation gives the Dunk Low licence for extra material and graphic work, which is exactly what a themed release needs if it is going to survive past October. Style code DQ7681 001 identifies it. Nike has been playing with seasonal and calendar storytelling for decades because it works: give a familiar silhouette a specific occasion, and you turn a shoe people already own into one they want a second version of.
Themed shoes work best when the outfit ignores the theme. Wear it with black straight leg denim and a plain black hoodie so the graphic detail is the only seasonal thing on you, or with olive cargo trousers and a cream crewneck for an autumn look where the colours feel earned rather than costume like. It belongs to evenings, weekends and parties, and it is best kept away from formal settings. Fit follows standard Dunk Low sizing, which runs slightly long. Brush dry before any cleaning, spot treat printed panels with a barely damp cloth, and store away from direct sunlight so themed graphics keep their contrast.
Nike's calendar releases exist because its shoes stopped being sports equipment a long time ago. From the 1980s Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress and status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion, and a brand worn that widely inherits the culture's own rituals, holidays included. Nike SB pushed the Dunk furthest as a canvas for ideas outside sport, sometimes at cost, as when the line's 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew criticism from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June that year. Themed Dunks are the harmless end of that same creative licence.
Seasonal SE builds put their budget into surface: expect themed graphic detailing, contrast material choices and finishing touches that a general release would not carry, applied to the standard Dunk Low chassis. That chassis is a low cut court shoe with overlay panels and a flat outsole, firm underfoot and stable rather than cushioned, and it breaks in across the toe box over a few wears. The parts to be careful with are any printed or specially treated panels, since those cannot be cleaned aggressively without lifting. Nike's outsole engineering still descends from the waffle sole Bill Bowerman produced with a waffle iron, the founding piece of company design.
