Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 30 November 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Light Soft Pink/Pink Foam/Medium Soft Pink/Light Soft Pink. Nike's public voice has been tough since Wieden+Kennedy became its agency in 1976 and Dan Wieden wrote Just Do It in 1988, a line built entirely on effort and refusal to quit. Which makes a Teddy Bear Dunk funny in a way the brand rarely allows itself. This is a Dunk Low SE, the special execution tier where Nike changes materials rather than shape, and the theme is exactly what the name says: a soft, furred, brown toned take on a shoe designed for a hardwood court. There is no athlete here, no story about performance and nothing to prove. It works because the Dunk Low is so recognisable that you can render it in an absurd material and it is still instantly a Dunk.
Texture is the whole outfit, so keep the clothes flat. Recipe one: dark straight leg denim, a cream knit and a brown leather or shearling jacket, a warm layered build where the shoe's pile echoes the outerwear. Recipe two: black trousers with a plain black crewneck, hard contrast that makes the brown texture the only soft thing in the fit. Do not add another furred or heavily textured piece. This is a cold weather and evening shoe, and it is genuinely bad in rain, because a wet napped upper takes days to recover. Take your usual Dunk Low size. Brush with a soft suede brush, never soak, never machine wash, and store in a bag away from dust.
The Dunk became a cultural object through the same route Air Force 1s and Air Max models took, moving from sport into mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward and into 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Once a shoe is that established, novelty becomes a legitimate design mode: you can only make a joke on a silhouette everyone already knows by heart. Nike has been willing to be playful in other registers too, buying the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021 and working with artist Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022. A furred Dunk is the physical, much sillier version of that licence.
SE in Nike's naming means special materials on a familiar chassis, and here the material is the entire idea: a plush, napped surface where you expect smooth leather, in warm brown tones. Napped and furred uppers behave nothing like leather. They collect dust, they mat down where they rub, and they cannot be scrubbed, because pressure flattens the pile permanently and leaves a shiny patch. Brushing along the nap with a soft suede brush is the only maintenance that works. Underneath, the shoe is a standard Dunk Low with a broad flat forefoot and the rubber tread that descends from Bowerman's waffle sole, so it wears and fits like any other pair in the range.
