    Culture Note™

What The is Nike's own convention for a shoe that eats its own history: panels lifted from multiple previous releases, assembled asymmetrically, so no two sections of the shoe agree with each other. Handing that format to CLOT turns it from an in house joke into a collaborative archive, where the mismatched panels reference a shared body of work rather than only Nike's. The SP designation marks it as a special project rather than a general release. Everything the Dunk has become, a canvas rather than a court shoe, is concentrated in this one make up, and the design succeeds precisely because the underlying silhouette is so rigidly two tone by default.
A multi panel shoe cannot be styled with anything patterned, so keep the outfit to two colours maximum. Loose black denim with a plain white tee lets each panel be seen. Alternatively, olive cargo trousers with a black knit, where the earth tone picks up whichever warm panel the shoe carries. Cuff the hem clear of the collar so the asymmetry actually reads. Occasion is casual and daylight. Keep them dry, since mixed material uppers are the least forgiving in rain. Sizing follows Dunk convention, long through the toe, half down for most. Rotate them rather than wearing daily.
Nike's partnership history is broader than its collaboration history. It began as a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger from 1964 to 1972, has worked with Wieden+Kennedy since 1976, paired with Apple on Nike+ to put run tracking in the shoe, and has bought companies outright rather than only borrowing them, including Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars. Against that background, giving a silhouette over to an outside design house for a patchwork build is a small act with an outsized effect: it tells you the Dunk is now a shared language rather than a Nike product line.
A patchwork Dunk Low, which is the hardest version of this shoe to build: multiple materials meeting at seams that were designed for two, over a padded collar, a foam sockliner and a rubber cupsole. Expect the panels to behave differently to each other, because they are different: suede sections need dry brushing, smooth leather needs a damp wipe, and any textile or printed section needs to be left alone unless it truly needs cleaning. That mixed material reality is also the wear story, since the softest panel will scuff long before the toughest one does. Underfoot it is the usual Dunk answer, flat, firm and low.
