Designed by Peter Moore and part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Midnight Navy/Light Smoke Grey/Summit White. Summit White with Midnight Navy is the Dunk in its most institutional voice. The silhouette was drawn for basketball, and its two panel upper exists so a shoe can be issued in a set of colours rather than a single one, which is why navy over white feels less like a fashion choice and more like a team sheet. Midnight Navy is the deepest blue in the palette, closer to black than to royal, which keeps the shoe from looking sporty. Against Summit White it produces the most formal contrast a Dunk can manage. This is the pair you wear when you want the shape and none of the noise, and it is the reason navy has become a permanent fixture in the line.
Two setups. Smart casual: grey or stone chinos with a clean break, a white oxford, a navy knit over the shoulders, the shoe finishing rather than driving the outfit. Weekend: mid wash denim, a striped tee and a navy overshirt, where the two tones tie the whole palette together. Navy and white is one of the few sneaker colourways that works in an office that allows trainers. Dunks fit true and the collar softens after a week. Keep them off wet streets, clean the white panels the same day they mark, and use a shoe tree or paper in storage so the toe box holds its shape rather than folding.
Nike stopped being just a supplier around 1990, when it moved into its Beaverton world headquarters and opened the first Niketown in downtown Portland, turning the buying of trainers into an event. The Dunk benefits from that theatre more than most models, because its appeal is entirely release driven. A white and navy Dunk is the endpoint of that journey, a basketball shoe that now reads as smart. It is what a hyped silhouette looks like when it has been fully absorbed into the wardrobe.
A Dunk Low is deliberately basic: low collar, padded ankle, a leather style panelled upper and a flat rubber cup sole that sits close to the ground. Navy overlays on a white base mean the panel edges are the design, so the quality of the cut and the stitch line is what you are actually buying. Nike's outsole thinking began with Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron in search of grip and lightness, and the flat Dunk sole is the least decorated end of that tradition. Two tone shoes need two cleaning approaches: a foam cleaner and soft brush for the white, a damp cloth and conditioner for the navy. Do not let the two bleed by soaking the shoe.
