Released on 25 February 2017 and part of the Killshot line. This release has the Sail/Midnight Navy/Gum Yellow colourway. Not every important Nike is a basketball shoe. The Killshot 2 comes out of the brand's court tennis side, a low, simple, unlogo-heavy trainer that looks closer to a 1970s athletic shoe than to anything the company sells as performance now. Its second life came through J.Crew, the American clothing retailer, which stocked it and turned it into a menswear staple rather than a sneaker release. This Sail and Midnight Navy pair is the version that made the case: an off-white base with a deep navy Swoosh, restrained enough to sit under a suit trouser and recognisable enough that the people who know, know.
Wear one: mid-grey wool trousers with a navy knit and no visible sock, the standard smart-casual application this pair is famous for, where the navy Swoosh ties back to the top half. Wear two: washed khaki chinos with a white oxford shirt, letting the sail base warm up an otherwise crisp fit. This shape flatters a slim or straight hem that breaks just on the shoe, since the low profile disappears under anything too wide. Sizing runs narrow and snug, so allow for it. Clean the sail panels with mild soap on a soft brush and dry naturally, since sail yellows further under heat, and keep the navy dry to stop the dye lifting.
Nike's cultural weight is usually measured through basketball, where the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon campaigns made the brand a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion. The Killshot 2 succeeded by doing the opposite, arriving through a clothing retailer's catalogue rather than a hype release, and being adopted by people dressing for offices rather than for courts. That is a real part of the Nike story too: shoes from the 1970s and 1980s pattern book returning through 1990s and 2000s casual dressing and then into everyday menswear, where the quietest silhouettes tend to last longest.
The Killshot 2 is built low and narrow, with a slim profile that sits much closer to the ground than a Dunk or an Air Force 1. The upper is a simple two or three panel arrangement with a stitched Swoosh, minimal padding around the collar and a low-volume toe box, which is why it reads more like a shoe than a sneaker under tailoring. Sail is a warm off-white rather than a bright white, so the whole shoe sits in a softer register, and Midnight Navy is dark enough to function almost as a neutral. Underfoot the outsole follows Nike's traction thinking, which begins with Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron to make a lighter, grippier sole.
