Origin
Part of the ReactX Rejuven8 line. This release has a reactx upper in Dark Team Red. Nike exists because a coach thought runners deserved better than what the market offered. Bill Bowerman coached at the University of Oregon, believed American athletes needed lighter shoes, and with Phil Knight built Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 to import them. Everything the company has done in foam since answers that original question. The ReactX Rejuven8 is the recovery end of it, a shoe built for the hours around training rather than the training itself, finished here in Dark Team Red. That is a deliberately unglamorous brief, and it is the closest modern Nike gets to Bowerman's actual concern, which was never the race, it was what the athlete's feet felt like afterwards.
Utility
Use one: straight after a run or a gym session, with a thick cushioned sock, worn loose so the foot can spread and the raised footbed does its job. Use two: as a house and errand shoe, with track trousers or shorts, where the dark red keeps it from looking like clinical equipment. Do not train in it, since a recovery shoe is deliberately soft and offers little lateral support. Sizing should be relaxed rather than snug. Foam uppers and midsoles do not like heat, so keep it away from radiators and car dashboards, which permanently deform foam, and clean it with a damp cloth and mild soap rather than immersion.
Influence
Nike's running credibility was established by Steve Prefontaine, the first track athlete endorser and the brand's symbol of running as attitude rather than only sport, who has a statue at the company headquarters. Recovery footwear is the least romantic part of that lineage and one of the fastest growing, because the culture around endurance sport now takes rest as seriously as training. Nike's technical vocabulary supports it, from Flywire holding the foot with minimal upper material to Dri-FIT moisture management across apparel. A dark red recovery shoe is a small sign of how far the category has come, since it is now expected to look like something you would leave the house in.

ReactX is named on the shoe as the foam platform, and the model's whole shape is organised around it: a thick, softly contoured midsole with a raised, sculpted footbed designed to be stepped into rather than laced tight. Nike's foam programme runs deep, from Lunarlite as a lightweight cushioning material to ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam used in the Vaporfly and the most responsive in the range, so a recovery shoe sits at the soft, slow end of a well-developed family. The upper is minimal by design, because a shoe worn between sessions needs to go on quickly and hold the foot loosely rather than lock it down.
