Culture Note™
Nike and music have a complicated file. The company used the Beatles' Revolution in 1987 after paying Capitol Records without Apple Records' approval, was sued and pulled the ads in March 1988. Nike SB then appropriated Minor Threat's album art in 2005, drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologised that June before settling out of court. A Run The Jewels SB Dunk High is the corrected version of that relationship: a group brought in as partners rather than sampled without asking. The high-top SB is the right canvas for it, a skate shoe with enough surface to carry a group's graphic identity properly rather than as a heel-tab afterthought.
Wear one: baggy black denim, a band or group tee and a work jacket, hem stacked over the collar so the shaft graphics still peek through when you walk. Wear two: olive cargo trousers cuffed once with a black hoodie, which puts the collar detailing fully on display and keeps the palette grounded. High tops need decisive hems, either fully over or fully clear. Lace the top eyelets loose if you want the collar to sit open. Clean by section, dry brush any textured or napped panels and use a barely damp cloth on smooth ones, and keep printed graphics away from soap, since applied artwork lifts long before the leather gives up.
Nike SB's standing was built through the scenes it worked with, and its worst moments came when it took from them instead. That history is why a formal music partnership carries weight here rather than reading as a licensing deal. It also connects to the wider arc in which Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, with its basketball and skate silhouettes moving into mainstream American youth dress and then into 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes. Run The Jewels is the name on this pair, and the shoe is designed to be recognised by people who know the name before they know the style code.
Style code DX4356 600 marks this SB Dunk High. The High is a heavier build than the Low: a padded collar rising above the ankle, additional eyelets through the shaft and a taller heel counter, and in SB form the tongue and collar padding is thicker again because the shoe is meant to absorb board impact. That extra surface area is why collaborative graphics land better on a High, since the shaft, heel and tongue all become usable space. Underfoot the outsole follows Nike's traction lineage, which starts with Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron in pursuit of a lighter, grippier sole. Expect a stiff first week and a properly supportive shoe after it.
