Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 November 2018 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Black/Chrome-Black colourway. Diamond Supply Co is a skate hardware and clothing label, and its Nike SB Dunk collaborations are among the small number that skaters and collectors agree on. This Black Diamond version takes the SB Dunk Low into a dark, jewel referencing execution rather than the brand's better known pale blue. Nike SB exists as the company's negotiated entry into skating, a culture it could not buy, and the line has run on genuine partnerships since the 2005 episode in which it used Minor Threat's 1981 album art on a tour flyer, drew criticism from Ian MacKaye, apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court.
Two ways. Skating: loose denim or cargos stacking over the collar, a plain tee, and the padded tongue absorbing what the board sends back. Evening: black tailored trousers with a slight break and a black knit, where the textural and hardware detail does the work that colour normally would. Works year round, including in poor weather, which most collectable SB colourways do not. Fit is true, though the padded tongue makes the throat snug, so try with your usual sock. Brush textured panels dry, wipe hardware with a soft cloth rather than a cleaner, and use an eraser block on the sole wall.
Nike built its cultural authority through basketball, advertising and music, from the 1984 Michael Jordan signing to Just Do It in 1988, but skating required a different approach entirely: local shops, skater owned brands and pro models built with riders rather than around them. Collaborations with labels like this one are how the SB line demonstrates that it is still part of that world rather than borrowing from it. The Dunk's odd double life, destroyed on a board by some buyers and shelved unworn by others, starts here.
The SB specification is a real build change over a standard Dunk: a thick padded tongue, additional collar cushioning to take landing impact, and reinforcement through the panels that grip tape destroys first, all on a flat cupsole made for board feel rather than court traction. A black execution with a jewel theme usually spends its budget on material contrast and hardware, so expect differences between smooth and textured panels and detail at the tongue label, eyelets and insole rather than any change to the shape. Dark uppers hide skate marking better than any pale colourway, which makes this the practical version of a collectable collaboration.
