Nike SB is the arm of the company that learned the hardest lessons about borrowing from other people's culture. In 2005 it used Minor Threat's album art on a tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, apologised on 27 June that year and settled out of court. Since then SB collaborations have run on permission and genuine partnership rather than appropriation, and the Jarritos edition is a licensed one: a soda brand's palette translated onto the SB Dunk Low, the flat, padded skate shoe that has become the most collectable shape Nike makes. The colourway takes its cue from fruit soda, bright and translucent in feel rather than team coded.
Two ways to run it. Skate ready: baggy denim or cargo pants that stack over the collar, a loose tee, and the padding doing real work under your ollie foot. Street: cuffed straight leg jeans and a plain crewneck so the fruit tones sit as the only colour in the fit. This is a warm weather shoe, and the brights suit daylight. SB Dunks fit fairly true but the padded tongue makes them feel snug, so wear the sock you intend to wear when trying them on. Brush suede dry, keep them out of puddles, and accept that grip tape marks are part of the deal if you skate.
Skateboarding is where Nike had to earn its place rather than buy it, and the SB Dunk is the receipt. The company that built its cultural authority through Michael Jordan, Spike Lee and the Just Do It campaign had to arrive in skating as an outsider, which is why SB collaborations lean on real cultural partners and why the mistakes were so costly. A soda brand tie in is a lighter register than that history but the same logic: the shoe is a canvas for something outside sport, and its value comes from what it references rather than from what it does on a board.
The SB Dunk Low differs from a standard Dunk in the places that matter to a skater: a fatter, padded tongue, extra collar cushioning to absorb board impacts, and a reinforced construction around the areas that grip tape destroys first. Underneath is a flat rubber cupsole with a herringbone pattern that gives board feel and grip at the same time. The Jarritos execution uses saturated fruit tones across panels with contrast at the Swoosh and the collar, so the shoe reads as a palette rather than a logo exercise. Expect a firm, flat platform, a broken in feel within a week, and heavy creasing across the toe if you actually skate it.
