Released on 7 December 2024 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a leather upper in Fir/White/University Gold/Fire Red. Nike SB built its reputation by taking the Dunk, a discarded college basketball shoe, and rebuilding it for skateboarding with padding and a grippier feel. The Pro PRM tier is where SB does its storytelling, and this one goes to Seattle, a city with an unusually loaded basketball memory. The green and gold associated with the Supersonics is one of the most recognisable palettes in American sport precisely because the team is gone, which makes it nostalgia rather than merchandise. On a skate Dunk that reads differently than it would on a basketball shoe: it is a city tribute worn by people who never watched the games, which is how sports colour becomes street colour.
Green and gold is loud, so build around it. Wear with baggy black denim and a plain white tee so the shoe carries the fit, or go full nineties with grey sweat shorts, a green crewneck and white crew socks pulled up. SB Dunks fit slightly snugger than standard Dunks because of the padding, so if you are between sizes take the larger. Ideal for skating, gigs and long walking days; the padded collar is genuinely more comfortable than a retro Dunk. Keep suede or nubuck panels away from water, brush them dry with a suede brush, and use a rubber eraser block on scuffs rather than soap, which flattens the nap permanently.
SB is where Nike's relationship with subculture is most honest and most fraught. The line's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike, which remains the cautionary tale about a corporation borrowing a scene's imagery. Nike is also the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for twelve years, so basketball colour and Nike design are formally intertwined. A Sonics palette on a skate shoe is the seam between those two worlds, and Seattle wearers read it instantly while everyone else just sees a very good green.
Built on the SB Dunk Low Pro chassis, which differs from a standard Dunk in the ways that matter to a skater: a padded, puffier tongue, a more cushioned collar and an insole set up to absorb board impact. The PRM designation points to the upper material and finishing being the feature, with the green and gold split across panels so the silhouette's overlays are legible from a distance. Underneath is the low profile cupsole with herringbone tread that gives board feel while still gripping griptape. Nike's construction instinct since Bowerman poured rubber into a waffle iron has been that the sole is where the innovation belongs, and skate shoes are the clearest ongoing test of that idea.
