Nike Vomero Plus Black (Reflective)

Two ways to run this. First, as pure kit: black tights or shorts, a bright wind layer over the top so the reflective work has something loud to argue with, and a cap. Second, as travel footwear, which is what heavily cushioned trainers are actually best at away from the road: straight leg dark denim or technical trousers, a crew neck, and the all black upper reading as neutral instead of gym. Buy for evening foot size, not morning. Rotate them with a second pair if you are running most days, since foam recovers better with rest. Air them out rather than sealing them in a bag, and never put them through a washing machine, which flattens cushioning and dulls reflective finishes.

Running is where Nike learned to talk. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, became the first track athlete the brand endorsed and its lasting argument that running is an attitude rather than a sport; his statue stands at the Beaverton headquarters. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, first aired with an 80 year old runner named Walt Stack crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, and Advertising Age later named it one of the top five slogans of the century. It was about a person going out anyway. A black reflective daily trainer is the direct descendant of that idea, built for the runner nobody is watching, in the hour when nobody else is out.

The blacked out treatment is doing practical work. Road miles in a city are filthy, and a dark upper hides what a white one advertises. The reflective element is the functional flourish, positioned to throw light back at drivers rather than to decorate a shelf. Everything Nike has learned about cushioning since the pressurised Air unit went visible in 1987 points the same direction: the ride is the design story, and the upper's job is to disappear around it. Nike's upper thinking, from Flywire cabling that holds the foot with minimal material to the Dri-FIT moisture platform, is about taking fabric away rather than adding it. Lace these to a firm midfoot, leave the toebox room to swell late in a run, and clean the reflective areas by hand.
