Released on 27 June 2023 and part of the V2K Run line. This release has a mesh upper in Summit White/Pure Platinum/Light Iron Ore/Metallic Silver. The V2K Run belongs to Nike's revival of its own turn of the millennium running design, a period when performance shoes were built from stacked mesh, plastic cages and visible hardware. The company had earned the right to look like that: it held roughly half the US athletic shoe market by 1980, moved into its Beaverton headquarters in 1990 and opened the first Niketown in Portland the same year, and its design department was running well ahead of its competitors. Summit White is the cleanest possible reading of the silhouette, an all bright white execution where the layering itself becomes the pattern and no colour distracts from the structure.
All white is a commitment, so keep the rest of the fit simple. Wear with black leggings or slim track pants and a white or grey top for a clean, sporty line, or with light denim and a pale knit if you want the shoe to blend into a soft palette. The layered upper is roomy through the forefoot, so true to size suits most people and narrow feet should lace firmly rather than downsize. Great for walking and travel, not for running. White mesh needs maintenance: protect before first wear, brush dust off dry, clean marks immediately with mild soap and a soft brush, and dry away from direct sun to prevent yellowing.
Nike's identity was assembled from small decisions that outlasted their moment. Employee Jeff Johnson is credited with coining the name Nike, Davidson drew the Swoosh as a student, and Dan Wieden wrote Just Do It in 1988, a line first aired on 1 July that year with 80 year old runner Walt Stack and later named one of the twentieth century's top five slogans by Advertising Age. The Y2K running revival works on the same principle in reverse: designs that were purely functional at the time have become style signifiers because a generation encountered them as images before they encountered them as shoes.
Layered by design. Mesh base panels sit under synthetic overlays that cage the midfoot and reinforce the toe, giving the shoe a busy outline that reads technical from a distance. In Summit White every seam, perforation and overlay edge is visible, so the construction is literally the graphic. The midsole is wide and cushioned, part of Nike's long foam pursuit that runs from Bill Bowerman's waffle sole through Lunarlite and React toward ZoomX, the lightest and most responsive Pebax material in the range. The Swoosh sits across the side panel as it has since the mark, drawn by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson, was first used on 18 June 1971 and registered on 22 January 1974.
