Culture Note™
Designed by Andreas Harlow and released on 6 September 2017 as part of Nike's Air VaporMax line. This release has a flyknit upper in Black/White-Clear. The Ten is the project that rewrote how sneaker collaboration works: ten Nike models handed to Off-White and returned deconstructed, with exposed foam, visible stitching, printed text and a design language that treated the shoes as unfinished objects rather than finished products. The VaporMax was the most futuristic of the ten to receive that treatment, a shoe whose entire midsole is the Air unit, so cutting it open conceptually was almost redundant. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, made visible from the 1987 Air Max onward, and the VaporMax is that idea taken to its limit. Style code AA3831 001. The deconstruction was the point, not the styling.
Deconstruction reads best against clean clothing. First: black tailored trousers with a cropped hem and a plain black knit, so the exposed sole and printed detailing are the only visual noise. Second: raw indigo denim with a slight break and a white shirt, letting the shoe be the one broken thing in an otherwise neat outfit. This is a dry weather, controlled surface shoe. Woven uppers fit close, so take your normal length and expect a sock like feel. Do not soak it, do not machine wash it, and do not store it near a window, because UV is what ages exposed Air and translucent material fastest. Handle it more like an object than footwear.
Nike's collaborations were not always this respectful of the culture they drew from. The brand used the Beatles' Revolution in 1987 after paying Capitol Records without Apple Records' approval, was sued and pulled the ads in March 1988, and Nike SB appropriated Minor Threat album art in 2005 before apologising publicly and settling. The Ten belongs to the corrected era: an outside designer credited, given the archive, and allowed to argue with it in public. It also fits the older pattern where Nike absorbs or partners rather than only borrows, having bought Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars and acquired the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021.
The VaporMax platform puts the Air unit directly underfoot with no conventional foam midsole between you and the pressurised chambers, which is why the ride feels unlike anything else Nike makes and why the sole looks like the inside of the shoe. The upper is a woven textile, thin and flexible, which on the collaboration version carries the printed and exposed detailing that defines the project. Practically, this is a fragile object. Exposed Air chambers can puncture, translucent elements yellow with UV, and a thin woven upper marks easily. Treat it as a shoe with a limited service life rather than a daily driver, because that is what it is.
