The Cloud is the model that made On legible to people who do not race. It descends directly from the 2012 Cloudracer, the shoe Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig ran in, and by 2019 the family had carried On into roughly 6,000 retailers across 55 countries with about 40 percent of the Swiss running shoe market. The sixth generation is where that everyday shoe grew a wardrobe of variants, and this is the waterproof one in Triple Black. All black on a shoe whose whole identity is a visible pod structure is a deliberate move: you lose the contrast that usually explains the technology and keep only the shape. The women's build keeps the volume closer to the foot so the blacked out silhouette stays compact rather than bulky.
Triple Black is the most useful colour On sells in a wet city. Recipe one: black technical trousers, a grey merino crew and a shell jacket, a commuter fit that survives a soaked platform without looking like gym kit. Recipe two: dark straight jeans, a black knit and a long charcoal coat, where the monochrome shoe finishes the line instead of interrupting it. Best for rain, cold mornings, travel days and long walks on wet ground, not for hot dry runs where the sealed upper will cook. Size true to size and allow room for a thicker sock. Dry them away from direct heat, never on a radiator, and reproof the upper occasionally rather than washing it in a machine.
On reads as a design object more than a subculture badge, and the all black waterproof Cloud is the version of that logic aimed at real weather. The brand grew out of endurance sport, sponsors the On Athletics Club under Dathan Ritzenhein and even built bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics, so cold and wet are not a stretch for it. The lifestyle side opened when Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and The Roger followed in July 2020. What that combination produced is a brand people wear to the office in monsoon season and to the airport at dawn, trusting the engineering story without needing to run in it.
The waterproof membrane is the point of difference here, and it changes how the shoe behaves before anything else does. Sealed uppers breathe less than open mesh, so expect a warmer foot and a slower dry once water does get in over the collar. Underneath, the CloudTec pods work as a structural geometry rather than a slab of foam, compressing horizontally and vertically to absorb landing and support the foot through direction changes. Triple Black hides the road grime that a waterproof shoe is bought to face, and the blacked out pods hide the road grit that lodges between them, though that grit still needs picking out or it hardens and dulls the ride.
