Culture Note™
Released on 1 September 2020 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Mantle Green/Cream. Mantle Green Cream is one of the more thoughtful colour decisions in the Mexico 66 range. Mantle Green is a deep, slightly blackened green, closer to bottle glass than to olive, and it runs the crossed Tiger Stripes and heel against a cream body that is warm rather than bright. On a shoe designed in 1966 as Onitsuka's flagship for the 1968 Mexico City Games, built to take on Adidas and Puma, that dark green reads as heritage rather than as season: it is the colour of racing cars and school blazers rather than of sportswear. Cream keeps it from going severe.
Two recipes. First, cream heavy cotton trousers with a dark green knit and a tan leather belt, a tonal fit where the shoe closes the loop between top and trouser. Second, mid grey flannel trousers with a white shirt and a navy jumper, using the green as an unexpected third colour that still behaves. This works from autumn through spring and looks better under a slight break than under a crop. Take your usual size in the narrow last. Keep the green leather conditioned so it does not chalk, and clean the cream panels with a soft brush rather than soaking them.
Colours like this belong to the era after 2002, when Asics revived a name that had been dormant for roughly twenty five years and rebuilt it as a fashion label rather than a sports one. The longest running creative relationship of that era has been with Andrea Pompilio, whose collections ran from Fall Winter 2013 through 2017 before he moved into a creative direction role, and that period is when the brand's palette became genuinely considered. A blackened green with cream is a collection colour rather than a sneaker colour, and it works because the model's shape is disciplined enough to carry a serious tone.
The usual Mexico 66 recipe applies: a slim leather upper over a narrow last, a low flat profile, a thin cupsole and Tiger Stripes stitched on as structural overlays across the quarter panel. Dark greens on leather sit somewhere between navy and black in behaviour, holding their depth well and hiding scuffs, though they can chalk at the flex points if the leather is allowed to dry out. Cream is the vulnerable half here, showing dust at the toe and marks along the sole edge. The shoe stays low, flat and flexible underfoot with no cushioning of substance, which is what lets it disappear under a trouser hem.
