Released on 14 August 2023 and part of the P-6000 line. This release has a mesh upper in Flat Pewter/Light Iron Ore/Metallic Silver/White. The P-6000 is a collage, and it does not pretend otherwise. It assembles the mesh panels, stacked overlays and segmented midsole language of Nike's late nineties and early two thousands running shoes into one silhouette that never existed in that form. That is only possible for a company with an archive worth quoting, and Nike's runs back to Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron to get a lighter sole, which produced the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. Flat Pewter is the right finish for a shoe built out of references: a dull, cool grey that refuses to pick a decade, so the shape does all the talking.
Recipe one: grey on grey, washed sweatpants with a heather crew, where the pewter finish disappears into the palette and the shoe reads as texture rather than a feature. Recipe two: dark straight leg denim with a black bomber, where the cool grey lifts the bottom of the outfit and keeps a heavy fit from going flat. This is a walking and city shoe, not a training one, so save it for dry days and pavement. Mesh uppers hold water and dry slowly. Use a dry brush after every few wears rather than a full clean, since repeated wet cleaning breaks down mesh far faster than dust ever will, and stuff them with paper if they do get soaked.
Nike's oldest identity is running, and the shoes that ended up defining its everyday presence were mostly designed for a track or a road. The company was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by a University of Oregon track coach and his former runner, selling imported Japanese shoes from a car boot at meets, and its first track endorser, Steve Prefontaine, still stands as a statue at the Beaverton headquarters. Everything the P-6000 quotes comes from that lineage after it had been absorbed by casual and athleisure wardrobes through the 1990s and 2000s. It is a running shoe designed for people who were never going to run in it.
Layering is the whole method here. The upper is built from mesh with overlays laid across it, each one framing a different part of the foot, which gives the shoe its busy, technical read from three feet away and a surprisingly light hand when you pick it up. The midsole is broken into visible sections rather than moulded as one smooth wall, which is what makes the profile look mechanical rather than sculpted. Flat Pewter is a matte grey, so it hides light scuffing but shows dust across the mesh. Brush the mesh dry first, then treat the overlays separately, because a wet cloth dragged across both leaves tide lines on the fabric.
