Part of Nike's Vomero 17 line. This release has a mesh upper in Sea Glass/University Red/Blue Joy/Midnight Navy. Sea Glass with Midnight Navy is a colourway that borrows from water rather than from sport: a pale, slightly green washed neutral over a deep blue, the tones of something worn smooth by tides. On the Vomero 17, Nike's most cushioned everyday trainer, it produces a shoe that reads calm at a time when running footwear tends to shout. The brand can afford calm. It has been the default in the category since about 1980, when it held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and went public, and a company at that scale does not need every product to be an argument. Some shoes exist to be worn a thousand kilometres.
Two uses. One, on the road: long slow runs and recovery days, ideally with light technical socks, and a lacing pattern that leaves the forefoot loose and the midfoot firm. Two, everyday: navy or grey trousers, a cream sweat, a light jacket, where Sea Glass looks like a considered neutral rather than gym kit. Give yourself a thumbnail of toe room when sizing. Wash by hand only: cool water, mild soap, insoles out, newspaper inside, dry in shade. Never dry them in the sun or near heat, and rotate with a second pair so the foam recovers between runs. Retire the pair once the midsole starts to feel flat underfoot.
Running is the part of Nike that never became a costume. While the brand's basketball silhouettes turned into status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s and then into 1990s and 2000s athleisure staples, the training range stayed close to its purpose. That split is Nike's real achievement: the same company that sells collectible low tops also sells the shoe someone uses to get through half marathon training. Nike Grind and similar programmes point at where the running range is heading next, treating a worn out trainer as material rather than as rubbish, which is the only honest response to a product designed to be replaced.
The job of a maximal neutral trainer is to make repeated impact boring, which needs a generous foam platform, a stable midfoot and an upper that does not chafe once your feet swell. Nike's material contributions here descend from Dri-FIT, its moisture wicking fabric platform, and from the Flywire idea of holding the foot with cables so the upper can be thinner. There is also a quieter part of the company's material story, Nike Grind, which returns manufacturing scrap and worn shoes into new product and surfaces. Pale uppers like Sea Glass show road spray immediately, so rinse them regularly rather than letting grime set.
