Origin
Released on 29 March 2024 and part of Nike's Vomero 17 line. This release has a mesh upper in Summit White/Total Orange/White/Thunder Blue. Summit White with Thunder Blue is the warm weather reading of the Vomero 17, the version built for bright mornings rather than dark ones. White running shoes have a specific appeal: they photograph well, they keep the foot visually light on a shoe that is physically substantial, and they read as clean rather than technical. The Vomero itself is the deep cushioning daily trainer in Nike's range, the shoe you take out when the priority is comfort across an hour rather than speed across a mile. That priority is old company business. Bill Bowerman's original complaint in the 1960s was about how much American running shoes punished the people wearing them.
Utility
Running: light grey or white kit with a blue accent, keeping the outfit summery and letting Thunder Blue tie the shoe to a cap or top, since a white shoe under dark kit can look disconnected. Casual: stone chinos or pale denim with a white tee, where the shoe reads as a clean trainer rather than sports equipment. Best for dry weather easy mileage, long runs and walking, and genuinely poor for wet or muddy routes. Size half up from your casual length for distance. Clean quickly after every dirty run with cool water, mild soap and a soft brush, dry in shade, and never machine wash or heat dry a foam midsole.
Influence
Running has become as much a social activity as a competitive one, and the pale, clean trainer is what that shift looks like on foot: a shoe for run clubs, park loops and coffee afterwards rather than for a start line. Nike has been shaping that broader definition of who counts as a runner since Just Do It launched on 1 July 1988 with a spot featuring 80 year old Walt Stack, a campaign Advertising Age named among the top five slogans of the twentieth century. Behind it sits the harder credibility of sponsored track athletes from Steve Prefontaine onward, which is what keeps the everyday shoe from feeling purely cosmetic.
Construction
The build centres on a tall foam midsole, deep enough to soften repeated road impact and give the model its plush character. Nike's foam programme spans Lunarlite at the light end and ZoomX, the altered Pebax compound used in its race shoes, with daily trainers sitting in between where longevity matters more than return. Here the engineered mesh upper is Summit White with Thunder Blue picked out on the Swoosh and heel, which keeps the outline legible against an otherwise pale shoe. White mesh is the one real drawback: it takes road grime into the weave almost immediately and no cleaning brings it fully back, so treat this as a shoe you keep for dry conditions.
