Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 December 2020 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Whtie/Varsity Purple. Varsity Purple is a team colour first and a fashion colour second, which is the correct order for a Dunk High. Style code DC5382 100 puts a saturated purple against white on a women's build, and the high collar makes sure the colour is visible above a hem rather than hidden under one. Purple is the most demanding of the collegiate shades, too rich to disappear and too specific to match by accident, and the shoe is better for it. Nike's basketball authority, built through signature athletes including Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Kevin Durant, is what allows a court silhouette in a loud team colour to still read as credible rather than costume.
Recipe one: white wide leg jeans, a white tee and an oversized denim jacket, keeping everything else pale so the purple is the entire statement. Recipe two: black leggings or slim trousers with a cropped black jacket, using the contrast to make the colour look graphic rather than sporty. Do not attempt to match purple elsewhere in the outfit unless the shade is identical, because close misses are obvious in daylight. Highs need the hem to sit above the collar. Treat the white panels before wearing, clean with mild soap on a soft brush, and never soak, since water pulls saturated purple dye into the white leather permanently.
Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024, and its signature athlete roster runs from Michael Jordan, signed in 1984, through LeBron James and Kevin Durant. That is the institutional weight behind a team coloured court shoe. The cultural weight arrived separately: from the 1980s the Swoosh became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with court models entering mainstream youth dress and reappearing through 1990s and 2000s casual wear. Varsity colours are where those two histories are indistinguishable.
The Dunk High wraps the ankle with a padded collar and adds an extra set of eyelets, which stiffens the whole shoe and gives it a longer break in period than the low, but also better shape retention over years of wear. Purple against white uses the silhouette's panelling at full contrast: mudguard, Swoosh, collar and heel in colour, toe and quarter in white, so the blocking is legible across a street. Underneath sits the standard platform, a foam midsole with no visible air unit and a rubber outsole with a pivot circle, giving a flat, firm ride. The women's last is cut slightly narrower through the midfoot, so the high collar holds the ankle closely.
