Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 21 August 2023 as part of adidas's Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Static/Static/Static. The 350 V2 in Static is a resale market object with a closed history behind it. adidas announced the Yeezy partnership on 3 December 2013 and launched it in February 2015 with the Boost 750 Light Brown, 9,000 pairs gone in ten minutes. The 350 arrived that June and took Footwear News shoe of the year, and the 350 V2 followed in September 2016. Static is the near monochrome grey speckled colourway of that V2, and the non reflective version is the plainer of the two variants, the one that behaves the same under a camera flash as it does in daylight. adidas terminated the partnership in October 2022 after its design partner's antisemitic remarks and his White Lives Matter shirt at Paris Fashion Week, calling the comments and actions unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. This is not a live adidas line.
Utility
The speckled grey is a genuine neutral, so it slots under almost anything. Wear it with black tapered joggers and an oversized grey crew for the flat monochrome look the colourway was built for, or with washed indigo straight leg denim and a plain white tee when you want the shoe to disappear into the fit rather than lead it. The knit upper runs snug through the midfoot and long in the toe, so most people take their true size and lace one eyelet looser than instinct. Clean the knit with a soft brush and cold water only. Boost midsoles yellow under UV and heat, so store the pair away from direct sun and never near a radiator.
Influence
By 2020 the Yeezy line was generating around 1.7 billion dollars a year, roughly a tenth of adidas revenue, which tells you how completely the silhouette had taken over sneaker culture at the time. Static was one of the colourways that pushed it from lottery hype into something people actually wore daily, because the grey read as neutral rather than as a statement. The cultural weight sits differently now. adidas ended the relationship in October 2022 over the designer's antisemitic remarks, then agreed in February 2023 to sell roughly 500 million dollars of remaining stock with part of the proceeds going to anti hate organisations. Buy the shoe on the shoe, not on the association.
Construction
The V2 is built on Boost, the thermoplastic polyurethane adidas developed with German chemical company BASF and launched in its running range in 2013. Boost is made from thousands of TPU pellets fused together, and the bounce comes from how the material is processed rather than from the polymer itself, which is why it returns more energy than standard EVA foam and holds its behaviour better in cold weather. On a lifestyle silhouette that means a soft, springy ride you notice more standing than running. The knit upper moves with the foot rather than breaking in, and the speckled grey ground hides scuffing well. Style code EF2905 identifies this exact non reflective build.
