Mist is the Foam Runner in its softest register, a pale grey with a faint warm cast that looks less like a colour choice and more like unfinished material. That is the point. The model released on 26 June 2020 with no laces, no tongue, no panels and no logo, moulded as one object, and the colours it wears are named after weather, stone and dirt rather than after fashion: Moonrock, Desert Rat, Oxford Tan, Mist. Pale tones expose the shape more honestly than dark ones do, showing every curve of the sidewall and every clawed cutaway, which makes this one of the best colourways for actually seeing what the design is doing.
Pale grey foam is the easiest thing in the range to style and the hardest to keep clean. Recipe one: off white linen shorts and a stone coloured oversized shirt, a summer fit where the whole outfit sits in one tonal family. Recipe two: light wash denim, cropped at the ankle, with a white tee, where the mist tone reads deliberately soft rather than washed out. Best for warm weather, travel days and short errands. Take your true size and go up if your instep is high, since nothing adjusts. Rinse with lukewarm water and a soft brush after each few wears, since pale foam greys quickly, and dry in shade because heat warps moulded foam permanently.
The Foam Runner is the shoe that took the label into general fashion, well past the sneaker audience that made it, and it was imitated across the mass market almost immediately. Pale neutral versions were the ones that made that crossover easiest, because they read as objects rather than as sneakers. All of it happened inside the drop economy the brand pioneered, where scarcity, bot buying and resale turned launches into events. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 following antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, then sold through what stock remained, so pairs today come from that residue or from resale rather than from production.
One piece injection moulding forms the entire shoe, upper and footbed and outsole together, with no adhesive joins to fail. Foam Runners were made partly from algae derived foam, giving the material a matte, slightly dense feel rather than the glossy surface of cheap EVA. The perforations let the closed shell flex and breathe, and the contoured footbed is moulded straight into the body. With no closure system, sizing is fixed by the mould and by the width of the opening across the instep. Pale foam shows abrasion more than dark foam does, though because the colour runs through the material, scuffs dull the surface rather than exposing a different colour underneath.
