Released on 12 January 2023 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Cobalt Bliss/White/Ashen Slate/Black. Cobalt Bliss is the colour Nike reaches for when it wants a shoe to look fast without looking aggressive: a clean saturated blue with no second colour fighting it. On the Zoom Fly 5 it makes sense, because this is the shoe in the range built to look like a racer and behave like a trainer, sitting one step below the racing line that ZoomX and the carbon plate were originally developed for. It is the pair you buy when you have decided to take your training seriously but have not decided to spend race day money. Blue, in this instance, is the colour of that decision being made without any fuss about it.
Recipe one, sessions: black shorts, a white singlet or technical tee, letting cobalt be the only colour in the kit so the shoe reads clean rather than busy. Recipe two, off duty: grey or navy joggers with a plain white tee, where a single bright blue works as an accent instead of a uniform. Use it for tempo runs, threshold sessions, marathon pace work and progression long runs on road. It is too firm for recovery days and not light enough for track racing. True to size with a snug midfoot and a thumb of toe room. Air it after every run, wipe salt off the upper, and never machine wash a foam midsole.
Nike's fast road shoes exist inside a rulebook the company effectively wrote by accident. The Vaporfly launched in 2017 pairing ZoomX with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to generate extra spring in every step, peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and on 31 January 2020 World Athletics capped sole thickness at 40mm, limited shoes to one rigid plate and required general retail availability, with compliant models remaining legal. The deeper credibility is older: Steve Prefontaine as the brand's first track endorser and its symbol of running as attitude, plus sponsored athletes including Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson.
A firm road shoe built on ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive Nike makes, in a construction engineered to survive repeated hard sessions rather than to hit a minimum race weight. That means more outsole rubber, a more substantial upper and a stiffer, more directive ride than a racing shoe gives you. A single saturated blue upper is easier to maintain than a white or pale build, though a bright colour will still show salt marks after wet runs. The ride is quick and firm rather than soft, and it feels best at faster paces. Judge its life on how flat the foam feels rather than on how the upper looks.
