Released on 26 January 2022 and part of Nike's ZoomX Streakfly line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Summit White/Photon Dust/Black. Nike's founding complaint was about weight. Bill Bowerman thought American runners deserved lighter shoes than the domestic market offered, which is why he and Phil Knight started importing Japanese ones in 1964, and why he later poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron looking for a lighter sole. The Streakfly is that same obsession at its most literal: a stripped racing shoe for short distances, built around ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam Nike calls the lightest and most responsive in its range. White with Photon Dust is the appropriate finish, a bright base with a pale cool grey, which is what a shoe looks like when everything decorative has been removed.
Use one: 5k and 10k racing, where a light, low shoe lets you hold a fast turnover without fighting a tall platform. Use two: track intervals and fast tempo sessions, which is where most pairs earn their money and where the ride makes immediate sense. Do not use it for easy running or long slow miles; there is not enough cushioning and you will simply wear the foam out. Wear a thin technical sock, since the upper is minimal and will rub against thick material. White uppers show road grime instantly, so wipe them after wet sessions and let them dry naturally away from radiators.
Track is where Nike started and where it built its first relationships: Steve Prefontaine was its first track endorser, and the company later sponsored Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. Lightness has been a continuous thread across that history, from the waffle sole through Flywire, which holds the foot with cables instead of upper material, and Lunarlite foam, to ZoomX. Road racing's recent transformation drew most of the attention, but the shorter distances are where the reduction philosophy is most visible, because there is nothing left on the shoe to distract from what it is trying to do.
Short distance racing shoes are designed around a single question: what can be taken away. The upper is thin because every gram is carried thousands of times, the platform is lower than a marathon shoe because you are running faster and want to feel the ground, and the ZoomX foam supplies the return without adding mass. That produces a shoe that feels sharp and slightly unforgiving, which is exactly right at 5k pace and unpleasant on a slow jog. Race foam degrades from compression, not from looking dirty, so an old pair can appear fine and feel dead. Air dry only, no machines, no heat, and store it flat with nothing on top.
