Origin
The second generation Vaporfly is the one that ran straight through the sport's biggest rules argument. Nike launched the line in 2017, pairing ZoomX, its altered Pebax foam, with a full length carbon fibre plate built to add spring to every stride, and peer research found the combination could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. On 31 January 2020 World Athletics responded with shoe regulations capping sole thickness at 40mm, allowing a single rigid plate and requiring four months of general retail availability. Compliant Vaporfly models remained legal. Total Orange is the shoe wearing the loudest colour in the range, which suits a product that spent its life being looked at.
Utility
Use one: half marathon and marathon racing at goal pace, worn with a thin technical sock and no last minute changes to your setup. Use two: a small number of pace specific workouts beforehand, long reps at race effort, so your calves adapt to the plate before race morning rather than during it. Do not use them for easy days; you waste the foam and gain nothing. Wipe the bright upper down after wet races so grime does not set into the fabric. Air dry loosely laced, never near a radiator, store flat and out of sunlight, and count retirement in race and session mileage rather than months owned.
Influence
Nike's authority in running is founding level, not acquired. The company began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, run by a University of Oregon track coach and his former runner, selling imported Japanese shoes at track meets, and its first track endorser was Steve Prefontaine, commemorated by a statue at headquarters. The super shoe era is the modern expression of that, and it changed the sport's conversation permanently: times, records and comparisons now come with a footwear footnote. Bright colourways became part of that visibility, since a racing shoe photographed from the side of the road is doing marketing work in every broadcast frame it appears in.
Construction
Two components define the ride. ZoomX gives you deep compression and a genuine return rather than a dead cushion, and the carbon plate stiffens the platform so the foot levers forward instead of flexing through the toe. Together they produce a shoe that feels awkward standing still and correct at pace, which is the honest trade of a racing tool. The upper is deliberately thin, because grams matter across a marathon's worth of repetitions, and it is not built to be durable. Total Orange sits bright against road grime, so it will look used quickly. Keep them out of washing machines and away from heat, both of which damage foam and adhesives.
