Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 April 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Industrial Blue/Blue Grey/Sail. Industrial Blue is a colder, greyer blue than the Carolina tone the line is known for, and that distance is the point. Jordan Brand outfits North Carolina, Jordan's own university, so Carolina blue carries a specific meaning that an industrial blue deliberately steps away from. What is left is a Low in a working, almost technical colour, closer to workwear than to a college programme. The panel layout is unchanged from Peter Moore's 1984 drawing for a rookie Nike signed with an unusual royalty clause built into the deal. Colourways like this are how the model stays in circulation between the releases everyone remembers, and they are frequently the ones that stay in rotation longest.
Recipe one: black straight leg jeans, a grey sweatshirt and a black jacket, using the blue as the only colour without letting it turn into a statement. Recipe two: stone or khaki chinos cuffed at the ankle, a white oxford and a navy overshirt, where the industrial tone bridges the warm trousers and the cool top. Avoid pairing with Carolina blue or bright royal, which makes this shoe look faded. Lows want the ankle visible or a single clean cuff. Fit is true with a narrow forefoot that opens up after a week. A genuinely everyday pair: commuting, travel, long walking days, and forgiving about all three.
The AJ1's afterlife is a story of volume as much as scarcity. Air Jordan created sneaker collecting as a mass activity and anchors a resale market valued near two billion dollars, but the division that grew out of it generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike by 2022, and that figure comes from shoes that sit on shelves rather than shoes that sell out in seconds. An industrial blue Low is firmly in the first group. It is also the kind of colourway that survives the cycles of taste, because there is no moment attached to it that can pass.
Leather panels over a rubber cupsole, stitched Swoosh, open ankle, and the shortest break in of any cut in the family. A mid tone blue is one of the most practical finishes Jordan produces. It is dark enough to absorb scuffing at the toe and light enough that it does not show dust as the pale grey film black panels pick up. It also holds its tone in sun better than saturated brights do. The white midsole is the piece that shows age first, so use a foam cleaner and a soft eraser on the sidewall and keep solvents away from the paint edge where sole meets upper. Air dry, and store stuffed so the low collar keeps its shape.
