Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in University Gold/Black/White. Gold and black is college colour logic, and Jordan Brand knows it: the house outfits programmes including North Carolina, Jordan's own university, plus Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan, and it became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016. University Gold with black, style code 553558 700, brings that team-block thinking down to the Air Jordan 1 Low, where the 1985 panel pattern splits cleanly into two strong colours. The 553558 code family is the long-running low run, the pairs that keep the shoe available rather than turning it into an event. This is a school colourway with no school attached, which is exactly why it works.
Gold and black is high contrast, so keep the rest simple. Try black straight-leg trousers, a black tee and a black bomber, letting the gold panels be the only colour anywhere in the outfit. For a lighter approach, indigo denim with a white shirt and a navy cap gives the gold something cool to sit against. Low tops want a sock with real heel grip. Clean gold and black panels separately with a white cloth, since black dye moves onto light leather when wet. Keep them out of sustained sun to slow the gold shifting tone, and store with the laces loosened so the eyestay does not curl.
Jordan Brand outgrew basketball. It became sole equipment provider to Michigan's football programme in 2016 and sponsored an association football club for the first time with Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, and by 2022 it generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. College colours on a lifestyle low are the visible edge of that expansion. The older cultural engine still runs underneath: basketball meeting hip hop, Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising with Lee as Mars Blackmon, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting Jordan in their verses. This is a team palette that no longer needs a team.
Two-colour blocking is the most legible way to build this silhouette, and that is what you get: gold across the main panels with black on the Swoosh, collar trim and heel, or the reverse depending on how the blocks fall. The low cut ends below the ankle, so break-in is quick and the shoe folds flat when unlaced. Rubber cupsole underneath with the stitched sidewall. Style code 553558 700 places it in the standard low run. Yellow-toned leather scuffs visibly, and black next to gold will show any dye transfer if the shoe is soaked, so a colourless protector before the first wear is worth doing.
