Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Metallic Gold/White. Black with metallic gold is the line dressed for a ceremony. Gold is not part of the original palette, which was Chicago red, black and white, but it became a natural extension once Jordan Brand grew past basketball entirely and started dressing NFL, MLB and college programmes as well as its own athletes. This Mid puts gold where the eye lands, on the marks and trim, over a full black leather upper. It is the most formal thing the silhouette can do without changing material, and it works because the shape is plain enough to carry decoration without looking decorated.
Two recipes. Evening: black trousers, a black knit or a dark overshirt, gold jewellery, and the shoe reading as the last piece of hardware in a monochrome outfit. Or contrast: cream or camel trousers with a black tee, where the gold picks up the warm tone and the black grounds it. Metallics want matte fabric around them. Mids need a hem above the collar. Sizing is close to true. Dust the gold with a dry microfibre cloth only, condition the black leather occasionally, and keep cleaning solutions off the metallic areas because they strip coating long before they touch dye.
Jordan Brand crossed sports long ago. Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter are signed baseball athletes, sitting alongside basketball signatures and football names on the same roster, under a Nike division created in 1997 to hold all of it. Gold reads differently in that context: not a championship claim, just the visual language of a house that operates at the top of several sports at once. A black and gold Mid is the wardrobe version of that position, a shoe for evenings and occasions rather than for weekends, wearing the brand's confidence rather than its history.
Black leather panels with metallic gold on the tongue mark, collar trim and heel detail, on the mid height pattern with its padded collar and stitched rubber cupsole. Metallic finishes on this model sit as a coating on the surface, so they hold shine beautifully until the shoe flexes, at which point the crease dulls and stays dulled. Black underneath is the most forgiving base in the catalogue, hiding scuffs and marks that would be obvious on white. The result is a pair that ages in exactly one place, the gold, which makes care straightforward: protect the metal, ignore the rest.
