Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG Court Purple 2.0
Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG Court Purple 2.0
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 April 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Court Purple/White/Black. Court Purple 2.0 is the second run at a colourway the 1 was never designed for. The original palette was Chicago: red, black and white, colours that function as brand property on their own. Purple has no claim on that history, which is exactly why it works on the High OG, the cut Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 hoping for 3 million dollars in sales over three years. The shoe passed 150 million instead. A 2.0 exists because the first version sold, and the market told Nike the silhouette can host any team colour convincingly. Deep purple against white is the most confident non-Bulls statement the model makes.
Utility
Purple is a colour that wants a quiet outfit. First recipe: mid wash straight jeans, plain white tee, black or grey outer layer, shoe as the only saturated element. Second: full black, black trousers and a black overshirt, so the purple panels glow rather than clash. Avoid competing with another strong colour in the same fit, and avoid brown leather accessories, which fight it. Good for evenings out, gigs and city weekends. Lace fully for support if you are on your feet all night. Clean the white panels separately from the purple with a soft brush and mild soap so dye does not transfer, and store the pair in a cool dry place rather than a sealed box in heat.
Influence
The Banned campaign built on the league's uniform rule, which required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and carried a 5,000 dollar per game fine that Nike simply paid, taught the sneaker market that transgression sells. That lesson is why a purple 1 reads as legitimate rather than costume: the model's whole cultural claim is refusing to match. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put the shoe in their verses, and the resale market it anchors is valued around 2 billion dollars. Team colours outside Chicago are how the 1 stayed in circulation long after the player retired.
Construction
The build is the same panelled leather system that has defined the 1 since 1985: separate toe, eyestay, quarter and heel pieces stitched into a structure, so the two tone blocking is physical. Purple over white makes the seam lines unusually legible, since the boundary between panels is also the boundary between colours. The high collar can be laced through every eyelet for a locked ankle or left slack at the top so the leather folds, and the Wings logo marks the collar as it has since the earliest era. Rubber outsole, forefoot pivot circle. Dark leather resists visible dirt but shows creases as pale lines across the toe box, so expect the wear to appear as texture rather than staining.
