Released on 1 April 2022 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Collegiate Green/Footwear White/Gum 2. The Gazelle Indoor is the narrower, sharper relative of the shoe most people know. Where the standard Gazelle went wide into the world, the Indoor kept the court brief: a slim suede upper, a flat gum sole for grip on wood, and nothing else. Collegiate Green with gum is the colourway that suits it best, because deep green suede shows the nap of the material in a way brighter colours flatten. The Three Stripes on the sidewall are the only branding that matters here, and they were not invented in-house. adidas bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952 for two bottles of whisky and about 1,600 euros, then made it the most recognisable three lines in sport.
Two ways. Cream or ecru wide trousers with a navy knit, letting the green and gum warm up an otherwise cold palette. Or washed black denim with a grey hoodie and a green-adjacent beanie, where the shoe becomes the only colour in the fit. It suits dry weather, evenings out and long café days, not rain and not gym use given the thin sole. Size true but consider half up if you have a wide foot, because the Indoor last is slim. Spray the suede before first wear, brush against the nap when dry, and let gum soles clean up with a damp cloth rather than soap.
Indoor court shoes became the connoisseur's corner of adidas Originals, the styles people move to once the obvious silhouettes are everywhere. The lineage runs through the same terrace and casual dressing that turned adidas into the base layer of European street style, where a deep colourway on suede signalled that you had chosen rather than defaulted. Collegiate Green in particular sits in that tradition: a colour that reads almost neutral in low light and unmistakably deliberate in daylight. It is a shoe that talks to people who know the catalogue and stays quiet with everyone else.
Suede across the whole upper with a leather-trimmed heel tab, a slim padded collar and a low, flat gum rubber outsole. The Three Stripes are stitched through the suede rather than laid on top, which is the original reason they exist on adidas footwear: they held the upper together before they sold anything. Green suede is a material that rewards care and punishes neglect, going patchy if it gets soaked and then dried hard. The last is narrow and the sole is thin, so you feel the ground more than you would in a padded runner. Gum darkens with wear, which most owners consider an improvement.
