Culture Note™
Georgetown is one of the college basketball programmes Jordan Brand outfits, alongside North Carolina, Cincinnati and Michigan, and its grey and navy identity is one of the few non Jordan colour stories the line treats with real respect. The 85 designation points at the shape rather than the palette: a cut built to the original 1985 proportions of the shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, which sits and laces differently from the standard modern retro. Together those two things make this a fairly specific object. It is the earliest version of the silhouette wearing the colours of a programme the brand supports now, which is the kind of layering only a line with four decades behind it can do.
Recipe one: charcoal trousers with a clean break, a navy knit and a grey overcoat, running the outfit inside the shoe's own two colours. Recipe two: raw indigo denim with a single cuff, a white tee and a navy jacket, where the grey keeps the blues from flattening into one another. Skip black outerwear, which makes the grey look dusty. Highs want a hem clearing the collar so the shape reads. Fit on an 85 cut can differ from a standard retro, so size in person if you can. Good cold weather wear, dry days preferred, with the midsole cleaned before it yellows.
College programmes are where the line's institutional loyalties stay visible, and Georgetown carries a weight in American basketball that has nothing to do with Jordan himself, which makes the pairing more interesting than a straightforward Carolina release. Jordan Brand has since gone much further out: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016, sponsor of Paris Saint Germain in 2018, its first association football club. Those moves are only possible because the brand became a standalone division inside Nike in 1997 rather than remaining a single signature model.
Leather panels over a rubber cupsole, a padded ankle collar and the Wings mark that dates the earliest era of the line. An 85 cut typically feels different on foot from a standard High: closer through the midfoot, with a shape that sits more upright, so it is worth trying before committing to a size. The AJ1 predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line from the second model, so support comes from collar height and lacing rather than from anything underfoot, and the ride is firm. Grey leather is a forgiving surface. Foam and a soft eraser for the midsole sidewall, conditioner at the toe once or twice a year, air drying only.
