Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 September 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black-University Red-Dynamic Yellow. Flight has been part of this brand's language since before the Jumpman existed. The earliest era was marked by the Wings logo, a basketball with wings, and the house mark that replaced it is a silhouette of Jordan mid leap with his legs split, a pose Peter Moore had him recreate in Bulls gear for the camera. A First Class Flight colourway on the Retro High OG collects all of that into one aviation themed release, on the exact pattern Moore designed with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 and put on sale to the public on 1 April 1985.
Themed high tops earn their keep with plain clothing. Recipe one: indigo straight leg denim with the hem sitting above the collar, a white tee, a navy or black jacket, so the shoe holds all the detail. Recipe two: black tapered trousers, a grey crew neck, white socks, keeping the outfit flat enough that the graphics register. Avoid layering printed clothing over a themed shoe. High tops want a visible ankle, so cuff rather than stack. Best in dry weather and good light. Clean any printed area with a barely damp cloth and no pressure, brush the leather panels dry, and store away from direct sunlight.
Flight is also how this brand describes itself commercially. From a starting point where Nike expected about 3 million dollars in sales across three years, the line sold out its first 50,000 pairs, passed 150 million dollars, and eventually became a standalone Nike division in 1997 generating about 5.1 billion dollars by 2022, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan himself under the royalty clause in his original contract. The Wings logo and the Jumpman are the two marks that carry that history, and a themed High OG is designed for the people who can read both without being told.
OG High means the original geometry survives intact: the tall ankle collar carrying the Wings mark, the wrapping quarter panels, the swoosh sitting proud across the side, and the lace bed running the full height of the shoe. Themed releases like this one work through colour blocking, printing and material choice rather than through any change to the last, so it fits the way every Retro High fits. Any printed or coated detail is the part most exposed to wear, since it sits on the surface rather than in the leather. Jordan Brand publishes no per colourway material sheet, so verify graphics and panel finish in hand.
