Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 19 November 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Varsity Red/Black/Sail/Muslin. Chicago is the 1's home colourway: red, black and white, the palette that works as brand property without a logo attached. This is that colourway in the Lost and Found treatment, on the High OG cut Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew after Nike signed a Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984, and in PS sizing, which puts the most storied colour combination in the model's history on a preschool foot. The premise of the release is age: the shoe is presented as something recovered rather than something new, which only works because the original is famous enough to have a mythology worth recovering. The first run sold 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars.
Chicago is loud, so let it lead. First recipe: plain white tee, navy or black shorts, white socks, nothing else with red in it. Second: black tracksuit with a white tee underneath, the red panels supplying the only colour. Avoid pairing with another red garment, which flattens the shoe. Occasion is everyday play and outings, and it will get scuffed, which is fine given the aged finish. Preschool sizing changes fast, so check length with a thumb width of space at the toe rather than buying to grow into, since a loose high top defeats the ankle support. Wipe the white base after each wear and let the leather dry naturally rather than near a heater.
Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, gave the red, black and white 1 its screen presence, and the Banned campaign taught the market that transgression sells: the league's rule required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesign. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z kept the colours in circulation. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars. A preschool Chicago is that entire history handed down at a size that will be outgrown in a year, which is part of the appeal.
Panelled leather in the standard 1 arrangement, with red quarters and toe, black overlays and white base cut as separate stitched pieces so the blocking is structural. The Wings mark sits at the collar, as it has since the earliest era. Rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle. The Lost and Found idea deliberately treats the finish so the shoe does not read factory fresh, which means signs of age are the design intent rather than damage: judge this pair on whether it looks consistent, not whether it looks pristine. In preschool sizing the construction is scaled down but the panel logic is identical, so it creases and softens the same way an adult pair does, just faster relative to how long a child fits it.
