Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 April 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a patent leather upper. This is the Air Jordan 1 High rebuilt as a comfort shoe and finished in the brand's home colours. The red, black and white of Chicago function as brand colours in themselves, carried from the 1984 Bulls contract into every part of the line. Patent leather is the other quotation here: it entered the line on the Air Jordan XI, where it brought formal wear material onto a basketball court, and it is the reason that model is still worn with suits. Putting patent on a 1 High collapses two eras of the brand into one shoe. This is the women's cut, built on the Zoom Air Comfort chassis rather than the original 1985 tooling. Style code CT0979 610.
Gloss red needs structure around it. First: a black tailored trouser with a clean break, white poplin shirt tucked, black leather belt, letting the patent do what patent does under evening light. Second: light wash straight jeans, a cream ribbed knit, small gold hoops, keeping the outfit soft so the shine is the only hard surface. Occasion is evening and event more than commute. Fit follows the women's sizing on this chassis and runs true, with more room in the collar than a standard retro. Care: patent wants a soft dry cloth and a drop of leather cleaner for scuffs, never a stiff brush, and it should be stored away from heat, which can cloud the surface.
The Air Jordan 1 is the model that created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, and the Chicago palette is its most quoted statement. The Banned advertising, built on the NBA's uniform rule requiring shoes to be at least 51 percent white and Nike's willingness to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesign, made red and black shorthand for refusing the dress code. Spike Lee, directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, gave that idea a screen presence. Patent leather adds the XI's dress code inversion on top. Wearing these is a two layer reference, and the market reads it instantly.
The upper keeps the 1's panel map, wing tip toe, separate eyestay, high collar with the Wings mark that identifies the earliest era of the line, but renders sections in patent leather so the red catches light as a hard gloss rather than a matte block. Underneath, the Zoom Air Comfort build replaces the flat 1985 cupsole with a Zoom Air unit and a thicker, softer midsole, which is a real change in how long you can stand in them. The collar padding is fuller than a retro 1. Patent does not crease like tumbled leather; it folds, and those folds stay, so lacing pressure matters.
