Culture Note™
Designed by Bruce Kilgore and part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has the Summit White/White colourway. Phil Knight stepped down as chairman in 2016, more than fifty years after he and Bill Bowerman started selling imported running shoes out of a car boot, and the company he left behind runs on archive shapes as much as on new ones. The Air Force 1 Low is the most heavily used of those shapes, named in Nike's own history alongside the Air Jordan and Air Max as a model that became a staple of mainstream American youth dress. This one is given over to paisley, a textile motif with no athletic history at all, applied across a silhouette so familiar that the print has something solid to sit against.
Let the print be the whole idea. Wear it with plain black or indigo straight leg denim, a white tee and a solid bomber, so nothing else in the fit competes for attention. Alternatively go tonal: grey sweat trousers, a matching hooded sweatshirt and no accessories, where the paisley reads as texture at the bottom of a quiet outfit. Never wear it with another pattern, and skip busy outerwear. Air Force 1s run about half a size large, so most people should size down half. Protect the printed panels before first wear, keep the thick midsole clean with an eraser block, and store the pair away from heat and direct light.
Paisley reached streetwear through bandana culture rather than through fashion houses, which gives it a very specific American resonance, and the Air Force 1 is arguably the most American sneaker there is. Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, with the Air Force 1 among the models carrying that status before it turned into everyday dress and then returned through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Putting bandana print on it is not a costume move. It is two pieces of the same street vocabulary being placed on top of each other, which is why it looks natural rather than novelty.
The Air Force 1 Low is a broad, flat, thickly soled shoe with generous panels, and that scale is what makes it a good surface for pattern: there is enough uninterrupted area for a paisley repeat to actually read, which is not true of narrower silhouettes. The seams give the motif somewhere to stop, so the print occupies specific sections rather than wrapping the whole upper. Nike's engineering inheritance shows in the sole, following the principle Bowerman set with his waffle iron experiment that a shoe is decided from the ground up. Patterned uppers need gentler treatment than plain leather: dab marks with mild soap, never use solvent, and keep the pair out of strong sunlight to protect the print.
