Released on 1 August 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a nubuck upper in Wonder White/Maroon/Putty Grey. Wonder White with maroon is the Samba OG in university and terrace colours, and it is one of the few palettes that makes the shoe look intellectual rather than sporty. Maroon is a deep, slightly dusty red that reads closer to a club scarf than to a kit, which suits a silhouette that came out of indoor football and ended up in record shops and lecture halls. adidas Originals exists to keep exactly this kind of crossover alive, running under the Trefoil that was designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics. The women's cut here changes the last rather than the story, keeping proportions closer to the foot without softening the shape.
First outfit: grey flannel trousers, a white oxford shirt and a navy knit, where the maroon reads as a considered accent at ground level. Second: raw indigo denim with a cream sweatshirt and a green jacket, letting the maroon warm up an otherwise cold palette. Good for autumn and winter, casual offices, dinners and long walking days. Samba lasts are narrow and low volume, so go up half a size if you have a wide foot or plan on thick socks. Protect before first wear, brush regularly rather than deep cleaning, and keep the pale panels away from wet dark denim.
The Samba's authority is inherited, not bought. Alongside the Superstar and the Stan Smith it became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and adidas has spent decades benefiting from a status it did not engineer, in the same way the Superstar's second life in hip hop arrived without a marketing budget behind it. Maroon colourways lean into the older, quieter half of that story: the shoe as something you wear because it is correct, not because it is current. It is a palette for people who would rather be recognised than noticed.
Wonder White is a warm off white, which is what allows maroon to sit against it without the harshness a stark white would create. The Three Stripes carry the maroon and do the structural work they have done since adidas bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, stitched across the midfoot as reinforcement rather than applied as branding. The build is low, flat and firm, giving you real ground feel and very little cushioning, which is honest for a shoe that started as indoor football equipment. Deep reds can bleed onto pale panels when wet, so avoid soaking, spot clean instead, and dry at room temperature rather than near heat.
