Designed by Peter Moore and released on 13 September 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Starfish/White. Shattered Backboard is one of the few Jordan colour stories that people can name without owning the shoe, a high contrast palette built around a moment in the player's history rather than around a team's colours. On the Mid it becomes an everyday proposition instead of a collector's one. The Mid sits between the OG high and the low, with a padded collar that supports the ankle without demanding the break in period a full height OG does, and it has become the entry point into the model for most buyers. The silhouette itself came from Peter Moore working with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, then became the foundation of a design series once Tinker Hatfield took the line over from the Air Jordan III.
Warm, high contrast colourways need calm clothing. Recipe one: black straight leg jeans, a white heavyweight tee and a black work jacket, so the shoe carries every bit of the outfit's colour. Recipe two: washed grey sweatpants cuffed at the ankle with a cream hoodie, a weekend fit where the Mid collar is visible and the palette does the lifting. Black or white socks, nothing in between. Keep the hem short enough that the collar shows, since a stacked trouser hides the mid height and makes the shoe look like a low. Wear them daily, brush after dusty days, and clean the pale panels before marks set, because that is where this palette ages first.
The 1 got its cultural footing through a collision of basketball and hip hop, and through advertising Nike was willing to build around conflict. The Banned campaign is the template: a league uniform policy requiring shoes at least 51 percent white, a 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike paid rather than redesign, and a marketing story that taught the sneaker market transgression sells. Every colourway named after an incident rather than a team draws on that lesson. Records by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried the shoe further, and it now anchors a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars.
Leather upper with a mid height padded collar, the panel blocking carried in the colourway's warm and dark tones so the shoe reads with strong contrast from a distance. The Mid's collar is softer out of the box than an OG high, which makes it the more comfortable first wear, though it gives less lateral support. Flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle underneath, firm and close to the ground, no soft foam ride. High contrast makeups depend on the light panels staying light, so keep a foam cleaner for the midsole and a soft brush for the leather, and treat scuffing on the pale sections early rather than letting it grey the whole shoe.
