Culture Note™
Black, white and gold on a patent finished Mid is the Air Jordan 1 dressed for a room rather than a court. Patent leather has a specific place in this house: it arrived on the eleventh model, brought a formal wear material into performance basketball, and is the reason that shoe still gets worn with suits. Applying it to the first model, in black with gold accents, transplants that idea backwards onto Peter Moore's original panel map. Gold has no basketball reference behind it, which frees the colourway from history and leaves it doing one job: making the silhouette look expensive. The mid collar is the right height for it, tall enough to have presence, low enough not to be equipment.
Recipe one, evening: black tailored trousers with a slight break, a black knit and a wool overcoat, so the gold is the only metallic on you and the patent catches light as you move. Recipe two, sharp casual: dark denim, a white shirt worn open over a tee, a black leather jacket. Occasion is night, parties, restaurants, anywhere lit from above. Fit is standard length, mid collar, crew sock in black to keep the leg line unbroken. Care: damp cloth only, never an abrasive brush, since it permanently dulls patent; keep the white midsole clean because it frames the black; and store with nothing pressing against the panels, as patent holds pressure creases.
Air Jordan reached culture through basketball meeting hip hop, with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes. Since 1997 Jordan Brand has been a standalone Nike division, and its collaboration programme with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS pushed the silhouette fully into fashion. A black and gold patent mid is that trajectory taken to its logical end: a shoe designed for hardwood, finished in materials that belong to eveningwear, worn by people who have never watched a game.
Patent finished black panels with white and gold detailing across overlays, Swoosh and branding, on a white midsole and rubber outsole. Patent behaves unlike leather: it shrugs off light rain and dirt, wipes clean with a damp cloth, takes no conditioner, and creases in hard defined lines that stay. Gold detailing is typically a foil or metallic finish and is the first surface to dull, so it wants wiping rather than brushing. The mid collar is padded. As the first model in the line, this predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered with the second shoe, so the ride is a stitched cupsole and foam wedge, firm and flat, with a short break in.
