Released on 22 November 2023 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Silver Metallic/White/Crimson. The Protection Pack is New Balance letting its 1906 platform get taken apart and put back together with the guts showing. In Silver Metallic the effect is at its most extreme, because a fully metallic finish turns the shoe into an object rather than a garment, closer to hardware than to footwear. The 1906 family draws on the brand's early 2000s performance running era, when running shoes were designed to look engineered, so the deconstruction reads as an extension of the original intent rather than a costume. New Balance can afford this kind of experiment because it has stayed privately held under Jim Davis since 1972 and does not have to justify a weird shoe to a market.
Utility
Silver metallic is a statement shoe, so control everything else. Recipe one is total black: black wide leg trousers, a black long sleeve, a black cap, so the shoe is the only reflective object in the outfit. Recipe two is grey and technical: grey nylon trousers with a light shell jacket, letting the metallic sit inside a cool palette rather than shouting against a warm one. Wear it in the evening and in cities, where light works in its favour. Practical warning: metallic coatings scratch and crease permanently, so avoid stiff brushes and solvents, wipe gently with a damp cloth, keep it out of heavy rain and store it stuffed so the finish does not fold.

New Balance spent decades as the least fashionable major sneaker brand, and that is precisely why it can now do something this conceptual without being laughed at. Construction
A Protection Pack build is about exposed structure: layered panels, visible fastening and reinforcement details treated as design rather than hidden, and here all of it is unified under a silver metallic finish so the shape is read purely through light and shadow. Metallic surfaces show every crease, which is part of the intent. The 1906 platform is performance running derived and fits closer than a lifestyle model. New Balance's midsole logic remains the reference point, with ENCAP wrapping a soft EVA core in a moulded polyurethane rim to give stability without deadening shock absorption. Width fittings apply as they do across the range, and they are the right lever if the fit feels narrow.
