Released on 18 February 2022 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Dark Grey. Black is the hardest colour to put on a 2002R, because the whole silhouette is built out of visible layers and black hides layers. That is what makes this version interesting. The 2002 was a flagship road runner from the era when New Balance still engineered its top tier shoes as pure performance objects, and the R reworked it for the street. Stripped of contrast, it stops being a technical diagram and becomes a shape, which is how the model actually gets worn most of the time. As a retailer exclusive it also sits in the part of the market where New Balance does its steadiest business, everyday shoes bought to be worn out rather than kept.
Utility
