Adidas Gazelle 85 Semi Court Green
Adidas Gazelle 85 Semi Court Green
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Released on 1 February 2023 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Semi Court Green/Cloud White/Core Black. The Gazelle 85 is the version of the Gazelle that leans into its older proportions, a slightly fuller, more archival cut than the modern reissue, and Semi Court Green is a colour that belongs to that era of sports shoes: a mid tone green with real depth, not a fashion mint. adidas built the Gazelle as a training shoe in the same spirit that started the company, with Adolf Dassler making event specific footwear in Herzogenaurach and refusing anything that did not serve the athlete. What survives of that intent today is the shape, and adidas Originals keeps it alive under the Trefoil, the mark designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Utility
First outfit: raw indigo denim with a cream fisherman knit, where the green reads as an autumn neutral. Second: brown or tan corduroy trousers with a white tee and a navy jacket, letting the green and brown warm each other. Ideal for cooler months, weekends, gigs and days you are on your feet in dry weather. The 85 cut gives you slightly more room than a standard Gazelle, so most people can take their true size. Spray with a suede protector before first wear, keep them out of rain entirely if you can, and store them stuffed and away from sunlight so the green does not fade at the toe.
Influence
The Gazelle became a fixture of European terrace and casual dressing alongside the Superstar and the Stan Smith, worn by people who treated shoes as a code rather than a purchase. That culture is the reason a heritage cut like the 85 exists: the audience knows the difference between iterations and cares about it, so adidas produces the older proportions as a distinct product rather than quietly updating the reissue. Green colourways sit deep in that tradition, since sports hall shoes came in colours chosen for visibility and team identity long before anyone considered how they would look in a photograph.
Construction
Suede is the Gazelle's material identity, and a green this saturated only works because suede holds dye with depth instead of flattening it. The 85 cut sits fuller through the toe than a modern Gazelle, which changes how the shoe looks with trousers over it. The Three Stripes are structural in origin, stitched to reinforce the upper since adidas bought the mark in 1952, and on this silhouette they run at a steeper angle than on a Samba. Suede and water are a bad pairing: protect before first wear, brush after every wear to keep the nap standing, and use a suede eraser on scuffs rather than water, which will leave a permanent looking mark.
