adidas Gazelle CLOT Halo Ivory
adidas Gazelle CLOT Halo Ivory
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Edison Chen and released on 14 June 2024 as part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a textile upper in Halo Ivory/Cloud White/Blue Bird. The Gazelle survives because it has almost no features: suede, a low collar, a thin sole and the Three Stripes down the quarter. That plainness is why it keeps getting handed to collaborators, and CLOT's take goes at it through colour and material rather than by reshaping anything. Halo Ivory is a pale, warm off white, the hardest possible colour to wear on suede and the one that shows the quality of the material most clearly. There is nowhere to hide on an ivory Gazelle: every seam, every dye variation and every scuff is on display. That is the point of choosing it over a black or navy pair.
Utility
Ivory is a warm neutral, so build warm around it. Cream or oatmeal wide leg trousers, a camel knit and a brown jacket makes a full tonal fit where the shoe is the lightest point. For contrast, dark indigo denim and a black crew turns the ivory into the only bright thing you are wearing, which is the sharpest way to use it. Keep socks cream or white, never black. This is a dry weather, dry city shoe: one wet commute will mark the suede permanently. Protect it before you wear it, brush it after each outing, and accept that it will not stay this clean forever.
Influence
The Gazelle's cultural weight came from below, the same route that made the Superstar and Stan Smith the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing. Collaborations on it are therefore a negotiation rather than a takeover: change too much and you lose what people came for. Working in a single soft ivory is the most confident version of that restraint, because it forces attention onto material and proportion instead of graphics. It is a shoe that reads as considered to anyone who knows how hard a pale suede is to keep, and as simply clean to everyone else. Both readings work in its favour.
Construction
Ivory suede across the upper means the nap is the finish, and a warm off white shows the direction of the brush the way a dark colour never will. The Three Stripes sit stitched through the panel in a tonal or lightly contrasted treatment, the structural approach adidas has used since it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. A Trefoil marks it as Originals product, the logo designed in 1971 for the Munich Games. Underneath is the Gazelle's thin, flat outsole with no cushioning to speak of. Ivory suede is high maintenance and there is no way around it: protector spray before first wear, a dedicated brush after every outing, and no rain at all.
