Released on 30 May 2024 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Better Scarlet/Cloud White/Gum. The Gazelle Indoor is the indoor court version of adidas's best known suede trainer, which means a slightly different last, a lower profile and a sole compound made for polished wooden floors rather than for outdoor use. That specificity is the company's founding logic: Adolf Dassler built for individual athletic events rather than for broad categories, watching athletes work rather than guessing. Better Scarlet with gum is a full saturation red suede upper over a caramel outsole, one of the loudest ways the model comes. There is no white base to soften it, so the shoe reads as a single block of colour with the Three Stripes as the only interruption. It is a shoe you notice from across a room, which is the appeal.
Recipe one: raw indigo denim with a cream crewneck, letting the red be the only colour in the outfit and the gum sole tie to a tan belt or bag. Recipe two: black wide trousers with a black knit, where a scarlet shoe is the entire point and everything else steps back. Gazelle lasts run narrow and long, so a half size down suits slim feet and the suede gives across the width with wear. Keep these out of the rain, because wet suede in a saturated colour will mark and can bleed. Brush with a crepe brush in one direction, use a suede eraser on scuffs, treat with a colourless protector before first wear, and clean the gum sole with an eraser sponge.
Indoor court silhouettes are the deep cut of the adidas archive, the shoes that terrace and casual dressing culture pulled out after the obvious ones were taken. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace dressing, and adidas's biggest cultural moment came free when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid and then signed the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. Once the famous models were everywhere, attention moved to shoes like the Gazelle Indoor, where suede, gum and a low profile do the same work with less recognition. Scarlet is the colour that stops it being a quiet choice.
Suede across the upper is what defines a Gazelle, and on the Indoor it sits over a very thin, low profile build with a gum rubber outsole. Gum is not decorative here: soft, non marking rubber is what indoor court shoes have always used, because it grips a wooden floor without leaving a line on it. The Three Stripes run through the sidewall stitched into the panels, a structural role the mark has had since adidas acquired it from Karhu Sports in 1952. A padded collar and a slim tongue keep bulk down. Better Scarlet suede will scuff to a lighter shade at the toe and burnish across the flex line, so the shoe develops a visible history rather than staying flat.
