Released on 1 July 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Crystal White/Active Blue/Matte Gold. Crystal White with Active Blue and black is the Samba OG at its most kit-like, a pale off-white body with a strong blue running through the Three Stripes and a black heel and toe detail to sharpen the whole thing. The Samba was made for footballers training on frozen ground, and colourways that echo team kit rather than fashion palettes are the ones that sit most naturally on it. This is a shoe whose authority comes entirely from function: a low, flat, gum-soled trainer whose shape has barely moved since it was needed for a job that no longer requires it.
White with a blue accent is the most versatile Samba configuration. First recipe: light or mid-wash denim with a navy knit, where the blue stripes tie the shoe to the top and the black detailing keeps it from looking soft. Second: stone chinos with a white tee and a grey overshirt, a warm-weather build the gum sole grounds. The Samba is flat and narrow with minimal cushioning, best for walking and standing, and many people size up half a size. Wear thin socks. Protect the suede before first wear, wipe the leather regularly, and clean the gum sidewall before it goes grey.
The Samba is part of the group, with the Superstar and the Stan Smith, that became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing and turned adidas Originals from an archive into a lifestyle language. None of that adoption was purchased. adidas's largest cultural break followed the same pattern: Run-DMC released My Adidas on Raising Hell in 1986, told a Madison Square Garden crowd to hold their shell toes up that July, and the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company followed. The Samba is the quieter half of that story, adopted by crowds rather than announced from a stage.
Samba OG build: a leather upper with suede overlays, the T-shaped toe reinforcement and a gum rubber outsole designed for pivoting on hard surfaces, on a low, narrow last with a thin footbed. The Three Stripes sit on the quarter panel in the reinforcing position they were originally stitched into. Crystal white leather is a soft off-white rather than an optic one, which means it hides less than pure white but discolours less obviously with age. Wipe after each wear, brush the suede sections dry, and keep the gum sidewall clean, since gum picks up grey quickly and never fully returns once dirt has set into it.
