    Culture Note™

Released on 1 June 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Grey One/Crystal White/Blue. The Two Tone Stripes Samba is a small edit with a large effect: instead of one flat colour running down the flank, the Three Stripes are split across two shades so the flank reads with depth. In Grey Blue that means a cool grey base with blue tones layered into the stripe work, which is about as subtle as a Samba gets while still doing something. It is a good demonstration of how narrow the design space is on a shoe this fixed. adidas bought the Three Stripes from Karhu Sports in 1952 and has never redrawn them, so every generation of designers is arguing only about material, colour and finish.
Grey and blue is the most office friendly Samba palette in the range. Recipe one: charcoal or mid grey tailored trousers with a light blue shirt, no jacket, where the shoe finishes a soft business casual outfit without looking like a trainer. Recipe two: raw indigo denim with a grey sweatshirt, letting the blue in the stripes pick up the denim and the grey tie to the top. Works for the office, travel days and evenings out. The Samba runs narrow and slightly long, so start at your true size and expect the forefoot to give. Brush the suede toe dry in one direction and treat the grey panels first, since that is where the shoe visibly ages.
The Samba is the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing, a position it earned by adoption rather than campaign, exactly as the Superstar became a hip hop uniform after Run-DMC put My Adidas on record on 29 May 1986 and had Madison Square Garden raise their shoes that July. Questlove has called that hip hop's tipping point, and it taught adidas that its most valuable product decisions get made by wearers. The Trefoil, designed 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, now marks the whole side of the business that runs on that principle, which is where every Samba colourway lives.
A leather quarter with a suede toe overlay, serrated Three Stripes stitched down the side, and the Samba's thin flat sole with the slight toe spring it inherited from indoor football. Here the stripes are executed in two tones, which requires the panels to be cut and laid separately rather than printed, so the depth you see is actual layered material. Grey and blue are close in value, which means the shoe reads as one soft mass at a distance and only separates up close. Grey suede is the panel that will grey further with wear, so clean it before dirt sets. The flat sole gives ground feel rather than cushioning.
